The difference between bukan and tidak / no, not

Tidak has a similar meaning with bukan, but they are used in different ways. Bukan is used to indicate the negative of a noun. Tidak is used to indicate the negative of an adjective or verb. They are usually placed immediately before an adjective or verb.

  • Itu bukan gunting.
          Those are not scissors.
  • Rumah guru tidak baru.
          The teacher’s house is not new.
  • Tidak, rumah guru tidak baru.
          No, the teacher’s house is not new.
  • Saya tidak belajar bahasa Jerman.
          I do not study German.
  • Tidak, saya tidak belajar bahasa Jerman.
          No, I do not study German.
